Robbie Keane has leapt to the defence of Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy during an interview with BeIN Sports, and gave an exciting prediction ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.
Spurs earned a 2-1 win in Sunday’s north London derby thanks to goals from Toby Alderweireld and Son Heung-min. It pushes Spurs into eighth, and within contention for Europa League football come next season.
Mauricio Pochettino has been sacked, just months after reaching the Champions League final. A lack of funding has seen more criticism aimed towards Levy – but Keane does not agree with such scrutiny.
The Tottenham icon defended Levy and rather than criticising the Spurs supremo, Keane lavished praise on Levy for his work in securing a new stadium and training ground. He also expects Levy to give Mourinho funds.
“Daniel Levy has done unbelievable things for Tottenham,” Keane said. “The stadium, the training ground, he deserves a lot of credit. What he’s done for that club is amazing, and he will support Mourinho next season.
“He will give him funds. He is ambitious, I know Daniel very well, he’s more ambitious than he ever was. He’s done the stadium, training ground is one of the best in Europe – now he just needs silverware.
“With Jose there, if he gives him the funds, big things could happen at Tottenham next season.”
TBR’s view – Levy deserves praise, but funds are needed
Levy has provided Tottenham with a huge bargaining tool. The stadium and training ground facilities are unbelievable, and for any potentially incoming players – that gives Spurs the upper hand.
As does having Mourinho as manager. Criticism does still come Levy’s way and that is expected, given the chairman has kept a tight stronghold on Tottenham coffers – with Spurs going from Champions League final to eighth.
Levy needs to give Mourinho funds this summer. If he fails to do so, then Spurs will struggle like they have done this season and blame will be put on the Spurs chief. But spending big could help Tottenham.
