Leeds United have announced on the club’s official website that Elland Road’s South Stand will be named after club legend Norman Hunter, following the former defender’s death – and Robbie Fowler has reacted on Twitter.
Hunter sadly lost his life last week aged 76, after contracting the current virus that has stopped football for the last six weeks. His death drew enormous reaction from the footballing world, many paying tribute to the defender.
Clocking up 726 appearances for Leeds in all competitions, England international Hunter was part of the 1966 World Cup winning squad and one of the first names on the team sheet under imperious manager Don Revie.
Leeds announced that the south stand would be named after Hunter. Owner Andrea Radrizzani said: “Naming the South Stand after Norman is the very least we could do to recognise the lifetime of hard work and dedication he gave to our football club.”
The decision, announced on Thursday morning, has been applauded by the footballing world. Chelsea legend Peter Bonetti also died from the virus, but it is believed that Jimmy Greaves has recovered from it.
Former Leeds United striker Fowler – who is renowned for being one of the Premier League’s best ever strikers – reacted on Twitter to the news that the south stand had been named after Leeds legend Hunter.
He remarked that Leeds are truly “marching on together”, after the Brisbane Roar manager learned of the news.
