Robbie Fowler is one of the greatest players in Liverpool’s history.
The striker earned the nickname ‘God’ on Merseyside for a reason. He was a goalscoring phenomenon when he broke onto the scene, and he quickly became a superstar in the Premier League.
Fowler could actually have been an Everton player before he joined Liverpool.
Robbie Fowler worked under some legendary managers at Liverpool. He won the treble under Gerard Houllier, Graeme Souness gave him his debut and he made it to a Champions League final under Rafa Benitez.
Speaking on The Big Interview, Fowler has been discussing some of the managers he worked under at Liverpool, and, interestingly, he named Roy Evans as his favourite coach at Anfield.

Roy Evans was Robbie Fowler’s favourite manager
Fowler named Evans as the manager he most enjoyed playing under at Liverpool.
The former striker says that Benitez and Houllier were the best in terms of tactical knowledge, but Evans was unmatched in terms of man-management ability.
“Graeme Souness, Gerard Houllier, Roy Evans of course, Rafa Benitez. They were all different. Souness was tough in his approach, Benitez and Houllier were technically and tactically superb, probably the best. I’m a big believer in man-management, and, for me, Roy Evans was my favourite,” Fowler said.
“He gave me the belief and confidence to go out there and play the way you can and go and beat teams. That element of the game now has disappeared because everyone focuses on the opposition, but Roy Evans instilled confidence in us to go out there and play the way you can.”
“Graeme Souness for a start, he gave me my chance. I’ll always be grateful for that. Not many managers will do that.
“Souness wasn’t afraid to put a young kid in and keep me there.”
Robbie Fowler record under different managers
Fowler says that Evans was his favourite manager at Liverpool, and it’s easy to understand why.
Indeed, Fowler found his best form at Liverpool under Evans.
The striker scored more goals under Evans than any other manager.
However, interestingly, Fowler’s goal-to-game ratio was best when he was playing under Graeme Souness, albeit the striker only played 23 games under Souness.
| Graeme Souness | Roy Evans | Gerard Houllier | Rafa Benitez | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Games | 23 | 205 | 102 | 39 |
| Goals | 15 | 119 | 37 | 12 |
| Goals per game | 0.65 | 0.58 | 0.36 | 0.3 |
As for the worst manager Fowler worked under, his goalscoring record under Rafa Benitez was his worst for Liverpool, but that was at the tail end of the attacker’s career.
Fowler used to argue a lot with Gerard Houllier, but he didn’t have the worst of records under the Frenchman.
Liverpool have had some amazing managers over the years, and Arne Slot is receiving plenty of praise at the moment, but in that pantheon of greats, perhaps Evans doesn’t quite get the credit he deserves.
