Robbie Fowler makes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang claim
Robbie Fowler has told the Sunday Mirror (22/8; page 69) that Arsenal fans should be asking serious questions if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leaves the club in the final days of the summer transfer window.
It has been a mixed summer for the Gunners. They have made a couple of statements in the market, spending big on the likes of Ben White, Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale.
But they have also come in for criticism. They have struggled to move some of their fringe players on.
That has had an impact. It does appear that they cannot address all of the areas for concern without further funds coming in.
One of the players Arsenal will reportedly consider offers for is Aubameyang.
It comes after a disappointing season for the 32-year-old following the announcement that he had signed a new deal at the Emirates.
Some may be tempted to suggest that Arsenal should consider cutting their losses with the Gabon international. But Fowler has insisted that many will be extremely frustrated if he does now move on.
“If it’s Aubameyang, then I’d be asking serious questions if I was an Arsenal fan,” he told the Sunday Mirror (22/8; page 69), when discussing who may yet leave. “They went all out to give him a ridiculous contract last year, when they were laying off staff.
“He was 31 when they gave him that crazy deal.
“No way would Liverpool, Manchester United or City do that these days for a striker.”
Arsenal will benefit more if Aubameyang finds his best form once again amid Fowler comments
Of course, many are likely to debate whether Arsenal made the right decision on Aubameyang for some time to come.
Perhaps it was excessive to tie him down for so long at this stage of his career. But it cannot be overlooked just how good he was in the months before he penned that extension.
And if he can rediscover that form once again, he could well go on and vindicate the club’s decision to hand him a new deal.
But there is no doubt that he has a major point to prove.
