Robbie Fowler has urged Liverpool fans to keep the faith with Jurgen Klopp this season because his existing squad will get better.
In his Daily Mirror column, Liverpool legend Fowler neglected to join the ranks calling for new signings and named Fabinho, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Joe Gomez and Adam Lallana as players who will all improve.
He said: “Fabinho and Naby Keita didn’t feature much until the turn of the year and will be far better for the season they have had. I can’t wait to see what [Fabinho] will become this season.
Keita is similar. If he can get fit – and stay fit – he will be an important player and Liverpool will be a better team. Add Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Joe Gomez and even a fit Adam Lallana and they will be stronger. Much stronger.”
Fowler’s theory is the one that Liverpool are clearly subscribing to this summer. So much of Jurgen Klopp’s plan is around having players who are completely at ease with his system and that can take time.
Chamberlain especially may well be ‘like a new signing’ and there are no obvious weaknesses in Liverpool’s squad any more.
But Manchester City won the Premier League with 100 points, but went out and broke their transfer record for Riyad Mahrez – evolving from a position of strength is generally wise.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool regret not doing that or whether their existing crop can step up even further.
