Robbie Fowler has been quoted by Australian outlet The World Game as saying that his Brisbane Roar side will not be signing midfielder Ki Sung-yueng, after he was released by Newcastle United in January.
Ki, 31, was released in January after failing to find a new club while still contracted to the Premier League side. His previous deal with The Toon expired in the summer, and now the South Korean midfielder is looking for a new home.
Since joining Newcastle in the summer of 2018 from Swansea City, the 113-time international failed to impress and managed just 23 senior outings under both Rafa Benitez and Steve Bruce. This season, he has played just four times.
Linked with a move to Brisbane Roar in the Australian A-League, Liverpool legend and Roar manager Fowler ruled out a move with the club unable to afford the ex-Celtic star’s wages – even though Ki spent some of his teenage years in Brisbane.
“I’m a realist,” Fowler said. “We can’t afford him and I don’t think anybody in the A-League could. I know he went to school here but we have to be realistic.”

TBR’s view – Where will Ki end up?
The report claims Ki was earning around 35,000 a week at Newcastle and if he is looking to rake in that kind of cash again, he needs to be looking at either a move to the MLS or the Chinese Super League.
The report claims that a move to America or China is on the cards, as are moves to the suddenly-improving Japanese league that currently boasts Andres Iniesta. The middle east is also an option, which boasts plenty of cash reserves.
But remaining competitive at a European side looks out of the question for Ki.
