Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has called on the club’s owners to sell up following the collapse of the European Super League last week.

Writing in his column for The Mirror, the former Liverpool and England striker sent a message to Fenway Sports Group, the ownership group of the club, that if they were ever thinking about selling the team, now would be the ideal time to do it following the failed attempt of forming a European Super League.

Liverpool, along with five other Premier League teams, signed up to compete in a proposed European Super League long with other clubs around the continent, but as reported by BBC Sport, every English side had pulled out within 48 hours of the initial announcement, and for Fowler, he believes that this event could see FSG sell the Merseyside club.

The former Liverpool attacker said: “If Liverpool’s owners were ever thinking of selling the club, then now would probably be the right time. It’s hard to see how they can ever fully win back the trust, or confidence, of the fans, after getting it so wrong over the disastrous Super League plans.”

Fowler added: “It’s not the first time Fenway Sports Group have got it wrong: ticketing, furlough, even Project Big Picture, which they and United were behind. The reaction to that alone should have set the alarm bells ringing over any Super League breakaway. That it didn’t says they don’t understand their fan base.”

TBR View: Finding a buyer will be tough, but Liverpool’s future will be brighter without FSG

The European Super League fiasco exposed a lot of hard truths surrounding club owners that many supporters already knew deep down, and for Liverpool, their future will be much better without FSG at the helm.

Although John Henry has overseen a Liverpool team that in the past few years have won the UEFA Champions League and a first English league title since 1990, the Reds could have become a European football dynasty had his backroom ownership of the team been better and involved more investment in the squad which could have continued on successes the Reds have achieved.
