Rob Holding hails Takehiro Tomiyasu as Japan beat Germany

Arsenal star Takehiro Tomiyasu‘s Japan have just pulled off a huge upset at the World Cup as they picked up a 2-1 win over Germany.

Hansi Flick’s side took the lead in the first half through an Ilkay Gundogan penalty. The game seemed like it was going only one way from that point, but Tomiyasu and co had other ideas.

Rob Holding hails Takehiro Tomiyasu as Japan beat Germany

Japan went into the game this afternoon as the underdogs.

Everybody knew they have a very competitive side, but Germany were widely expected to get the job done – especially after they went in at the break with a 1-0 lead.

However, goals from Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano, who was once of Arsenal, sealed a hugely memorable win for Japan. They now have a big advantage over Germany in the group of death.

Arsenal star Tomiyasu didn’t start the game today because he’s still not fully fit. However, he came on after half-time and helped his side keep the Germans at bay.

Holding, who like many Arsenal fans is a huge fan of Tomiyasu, hailed the Japan defender after the game.

“Super, super Tom, super Tomiyasu,” he wrote on his Instagram Story with a picture of his TV screen as Japan celebrated their incredible victory in Qatar.

TBR View:

Tomiyasu has been one of Arsenal’s best players since he joined them back in the summer of 2021. However, he hasn’t played as much as he would’ve liked this season.

Mikel Arteta has preferred Ben White at right-back, while summer signing Oleksandr Zinchenko is the undisputed first choice at left-back whenever he’s fit.

Most of Tomiyasu’s appearances this campaign have come at left-back when Zinchenko has been unavailable, and he has been outstanding there more often than not. His versatility is one of his biggest assets, and he proved that once again today.

Arsenal fans will be delighted that Tomiyasu is back from his injury – Holding certainly is.
