Rob Green says what Mateusz Klich told him about Leeds training, amid Christmas period

Rob Green has told Optus Sport’s The Kelly And Wrighty Show that he has spoken to Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich about the upcoming busy Christmas period – and stated that the Poland midfielder cannot wait, for one reason.

Leeds are renowned for their high instensity work both on the pitch and in training. Under Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds have gained plenty of plaudits for their style of play – with some pundits labelling them the fittest team in the Premier League.

Bielsa’s unique training technique of ‘murderball’ is critical to that. The Leeds players continuously play at high tempo, with no fouls and no stoppages. Even when a ball goes out of play, they have coaches waiting to replace the lost ball.

It gets the Leeds players ready at enormous instensity, but Green has told all about a conversation he had with Klich ahead of the Christmas period. Klich states that he is delighted there are lots of games, as it means there will be less training.

“I spoke to Mateusz Klich who is one of the centre-midfielders for Leeds last week,” Green said. “I said you’ve got a busy schedule coming up, and he said ‘Yeah, I like it because we don’t have to train’. The training is harder than the games.”

TBR’s view – Will Leeds suffer from burnout?

It is a season like no other – is a phrase that continues to be repeatedly used by pundits, but they are right. Bielsa’s sides, not just Leeds, are renowned for tailing off towards the end of the campaign due to their intensity.

We saw it in Bielsa’s first campaign at Leeds – missing out on automatic promotion and then losing in the play-offs. Some argue that lockdown prevented as much last season, giving Leeds players the break they required to push on afterwards.

This season, Leeds are playing less games – but in a more concentrated period and against better players. But they are more used to Bielsa’s demands and physical intensity. Only time will tell when it comes to Leeds suffering from potential burnout.
