Newcastle United suffered Premier League defeat last night and rightly so, as an inspired Southampton side went top of the league with a 2-0 win over the Magpies at St Mary’s .
Goals from Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong proved enough for the three points for the Saints but Newcastle still had some performances to make manager Steve Bruce happy.
Namely, Karl Darlow.

The second-choice keeper has been in phenomenal form since stepping up in place of the injured Martin Dubravka and that form continued last night.
Darlow made a string of excellent stops to keep Southampton at bay, including one spectacular effort from a long-range Oriol Romeu strike.
It was so good, even another former long-term Newcastle back-up had something to say about it.
Rob Elliott, whose nine year association with Newcastle came to an end in the summer, took to Twitter to call the save the best of the season so far in the Premier League.
Darlow’s save was just another indicator of his tremendous form so far this campaign, even if it was later usurped by an even better effort from opposite number Alex McCarthy when tipping over Joelinton’s headed effort.
It would seem nearly impossible to think that Dubravka might now come straight back into the starting XI when the Slovakian is back fit.
Elliott and everyone else affiliated with Newcastle will now be hoping there are plenty more saves like that in his locker for the tough season ahead.
