Riyad Mahrez opens up on N’Golo Kante following 2019 Manchester City rumours
Riyad Mahrez has opened up on former Leicester City teammate N’Golo Kante, who was once rumoured with a move to Manchester City after the Algerian winger joined Pep Guardiola’s side.
Speaking to RMC Sport via Sports Illustrated, the Man City attacker discussed his former Foxes teammate, who Mahrez will face-off against at the end of this month in the UEFA Champions League final in Porto, with the 30-year-old winger full of praise for Kante.
The Chelsea talisman was once linked with a move to the Cityzens in 2019, with Goal reporting that Guardiola was keeping tabs on the 2018 World Cup winner following a disappointing season under then-manager Maurizio Sarri, and Mahrez admits that he didn’t try to persuade Kante to join him that summer.
The City attacker said when asked about asking Kante to join City: “No, no it’s not up to me to decide. It is true that it’s better to have him as a team-mate rather than as an opponent. He is a great player and a great friend. It’s going to be a weird moment, but we’ll have the time to heat things up on the phone.”
TBR View: Kante under Guardiola would have been the base of a dream midfield
Theoretical transfers are always fun to conjure up amongst football supporters, and Kante playing under Guardiola is certainly one that is fun to envision given just how stacked City’s midfield is with quality and diversity and the variations that can be played if the Chelsea man was part of that group.
Although a transfer never materialised that summer, with City instead going for Atletico Madrid metronome Rodri, a midfield three consisting of the likes of Kante, Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan sounds astonishing on paper and a trio that could have dominated both the Premier League and the Champions League for many years to come.
