Ritchie De Laet the striker? Aston Villa misfit on fire in Australia
Melbourne City played out a thrilling 4-3 win over Western Sydney Wanderers in the Australian A-League earlier today. It was an enthralling contest which saw two late goals earn Melbourne the win.
It was also a game which will have Aston Villa fans scratching their heads.
The star of the show for Melbourne was Villa loanee Ritchie De Laet. But not in his usual full-back role. Instead, he scored two goals whilst playing as a makeshift striker.
De Laet recently made headlines after being thrust into the role against Brisbane Roar 11 days ago. He scored the winning goal on that occasion and today he scored the opener after just 30 seconds. He rounded the keeper before slotting into an empty net. He then equalised with five minutes left, taking a wonderful first touch on the edge of the box before firing home. Bart Schenkeveld then scored his first goal for the club to claim an incredible 4-3 win.
Aston Villa fans will no doubt be wondering how their flop full-back has now become one of the most feared frontmen in Australian football.
The Premier League winner cost Aston Villa a reported £2.5 million in 2016. However, he played just three times in his first season before suffering a knee injury and then struggled on loan at Royal Antwerp in his second.
Now, De Laet has six goals in 14 games for the Australian side, three in four as a striker.
Aston Villa could undoubtedly use some of that at Villa Park. It seems the sun down under suits the Belgian misfit.
