Rio Ngumoha poised for incredible 7,000% pay rise as Liverpool contract structure explained

Adam Williams has now exclusively provided TBR Football with an update on Rio Ngumoha amid his remarkable rise at Liverpool.

The 17-year-old is yet to even sign a professional contract at Anfield as he continues to pick up an academy wage of £300 every week, despite becoming the youngest goalscorer in history for Liverpool with his late Premier League winner against Newcastle at the age of 16 years and 361 days.

Rio Ngumoha is – however – expected to put pen to paper on fresh terms very soon, and the Head of Football Finance and Governance Content for GRV Media Adam Williams can now share details with TBR Football on how Liverpool are expected to structure the deal.

Exclusive: Bonuses likely to see Rio Ngumoha earn far above Liverpool salary cap

Liverpool have a policy in place to ensure first-year professionals earn no more than £52,000 annually.

It is expected that Ngumoha will have this salary cap enforced on him too, but the teenager should expect a 7,000% increase on his current £300-a-week wage as bonuses are likely to push him closer to a yearly salary of £1m.

Williams told TBR Football: “Rio Ngumoha has a lot going for him in terms of his value besides his obvious talent. He’s young, he’s homegrown, and he’s about to sign his first professional contract.

“Liverpool are said to cap first-year professional salaries at £52,000-a-year, but that will be quite significantly topped up by performance-related bonuses. I’d be stunned if he ends up on anything less than £1m per year, and there will be big step-ups year-on-year, plus provisions for image rights and so on.

“That’s a conservative estimate too. Otherwise, you would simply lose him to a club who are more flexible in terms of what they can offer. So, the headline wages are almost certainly going to be a bit of a red herring. The very fact they have managed to poach him from Chelsea, who pay very high wages themselves, tells you all you need to know on that front.

“At such a young age, you can’t be sure exactly how a player is going to turn out, but Liverpool are so sophisticated when it comes to tracking things like susceptibility to injury. They have software that does all of this for them, using biomarkers to flag when a player is likely to have higher injury risk. So, I think it’s less like it was in the old days where there was a genuine risk that you have a world-class talent but you are at the mercy of their fitness.

“Value is subjective, ultimately. Once he signs that first pro contract, it’s going to soar. The tribunal will decide how much compensation Chelsea get for him, but that’s distinct from his market value really.

“I think one problem elite Premier League clubs like Liverpool might encounter further down the line is that they have fewer clubs to sell to. The Premier League is so rich now that the vast, vast majority of overseas clubs can’t afford the wages of players reared in the Premier League. Look at Wednesday’s opposition – Atletico Madrid’s revenue in the last financial year was about £360m. Liverpool’s in 2024/25 was almost certainly at least double that.”

  • UEFA Champions League

Ngumoha – now Liverpool’s youngest UEFA Champions League debutant after coming on against Atletico Madrid – has played 20 minutes of football across three appearances so far this season, impressively averaging 0.7 key passes per game.

How Chelsea feel about losing Rio Ngumoha

TBR Football understand Chelsea are annoyed at how the situation involving Ngumoha panned out, and were shocked to see the England U19 international leave for Merseyside.

As the Blues focused on hoovering up precocious talents from abroad such as Kendry Paez, Dastan Satpaev and Estevao, it appears they failed to show a wonderkid of their own a clear pathway towards senior football.

Liverpool are now reaping the rewards, and deserve credit for giving Ngumoha an opportunity to showcase his ability.
