Rio Ferdinand urged Man Utd to make ‘fantastic’ £50m signing back in 2021, now Ruben Amorim could get him for free

Manchester United are yet to truly get going in the transfer window so far this summer.

The Red Devils looked set for a busy summer after wrapping up an early £63m deal to sign Matheus Cunha, but the Brazilian remains the only new face at Old Trafford as we approach the middle of July, along with 18-year-old Diego Leon.

Manchester United are still in talks with Brentford over a deal for Bryan Mbeumo, having seen a second bid worth a guaranteed £55m rejected by the Bees.

As that saga continues, Manchester United have now made an approach for a free agent who Rio Ferdinand was happy to spend £50m to sign back in 2021.

Ruben Amorim can finally appease Rio Ferdinand by bringing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Old Trafford

Back in April 2021, the man who made 455 appearances for Manchester United said on his Vibe With FIVE podcast: “It’s one out of the left field, but listen, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, for me, I love him.

“I’ve watched a lot of Everton this year and he’s a player that unnerves defenders. He’s not one you want to play against week in, week out. He’s aggressive, he attacks the ball well.

“He’s got into the England squad by scoring loads of goals in and around the six-yard box, scoring those ugly goals. I think he’d be a fantastic signing for Manchester United… I think he’d have a big impact.”

TalkSPORT state that Manchester United have now approached Calvert-Lewin after his contract at Everton expired.

The England international may no longer be the player he was back in that 2020/21 campaign – when he scored 16 goals in 33 Premier League appearances, compared to just three in 26 games last term.

However, Calvert-Lewin would have cost Manchester United around £50m at that moment in time, whereas now, he can be signed for free at the age of just 28, where he still has plenty of time on his side to make an impact under Amorim.

Manchester United face serious competition from Newcastle

While Manchester United stand a chance of landing the man born in Sheffield, the presence of Newcastle has to be taken into consideration.

TBR Football understand Newcastle have also spoken to Calvert-Lewin as he weighs up his next step, after spending nine years at Everton.

Despite a 1-0 defeat against Everton on the final day, the Magpies still qualified for the UEFA Champions League, so Eddie Howe can offer the free agent the chance to experience that level of football for the first time ever.

As a result, Manchester United will need to be especially convincing in talks with Calvert-Lewin, as the Red Devils have no European football whatsoever to offer.
