Gini Wijnaldum has been backed to become a crucial player for Liverpool amid the plethora of injury problems the Reds are currently contending with.
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand reckons the Dutch midfielder will become even more key than usual as the hectic festive period approaches.
Liverpool have just lost yet another player to injury, with James Milner sustaining a hamstring issue against Brighton on Saturday.
He joins Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson in the treatment room, and with Fabinho covering in defence, midfield options are suddenly hard to come by for Jurgen Klopp.
In the eyes of Ferdinand, senior star Wijnaldum is set to come in clutch.
The BT Sport pundit said on his YouTube channel: “I think Wijnaldum has been a key player before, but now even more so with all these injuries.
“His ability to play in multiple different positions; he can play the 10 role and he can quite easily play the holding role like he did the last game.
“I think he’s somebody of huge importance, with Fabinho having gone into the backline now. He comes to the fore as being one of the main men in the team. His role, I think, will be pivotal.”
TBR’s View – Time for Wijnaldum to stand up
With the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Milner and Henderson missing, Liverpool are lacking presence – but Wijnaldum can fill the void.
He’s a big personality and is obviously a senior star within the squad, and it’s a period where Klopp needs him to step up.
His leadership will be crucial, especially for the likes of youngsters like Curtis Jones and Neco Williams.
