Rio Ferdinand sums up Jorginho pass for second Arsenal goal in one word

Rio Ferdinand was left amazed by what Jorginho did in the build-up to the second Arsenal goal as they blew Newcastle United away at the Emirates on Saturday.

It says everything about how good Arsenal have been of late that it feels as though the 4-1 scoreline somehow flattered the Magpies. Mikel Arteta’s side were just relentless to extend their winning run in the Premier League.

Arteta made the decision to bring Jorginho back in the fold for the game. Jorginho never seems to let Arsenal down when he does play. And he was superb once again against Eddie Howe’s side.

In fact, the crucial second goal came from a moment of class from the Italy international. Jorginho spotted an excellent run across the box from Gabriel Martinelli. And he lofted a perfect pass into his path, which allowed the Brazilian to get to the line and cut the ball back for Kai Havertz to tap in.

Newcastle’s abject defending across the evening was summed up by the amount of space Havertz found himself in.

And speaking on TNT Sports at half-time (broadcast on 24/2; 20:56), Rio Ferdinand found one word to sum up the pass from Jorginho which led to the goal.

“Firstly, the ball from Jorginho was exquisite, passing it forward from that defensive midfield role. The run from Martinelli here, he stayed out wide the whole game against Porto, comes inside, Trippier has a decision to make. Makes the wrong decision, doesn’t go with him. And it’s a fabulous ball cut back for Havertz,” he said.

An inspired signing from the Gunners

It is always worth remembering what so many of us thought when Arsenal signed Jorginho from Chelsea right at the very end of the 2023 January transfer window.

Given the timing, and the fact that he was playing poorly for Chelsea, it appeared that it was something of a desperate move from the Gunners.

But Jorginho has been absolutely outstanding, on and off the pitch. His experience appears to help the side massively whenever he comes into the team.

And he is a winner. So his presence could be so important over the coming months with Arsenal hitting top gear at the perfect time.
