Rio Ferdinand slams Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris after Everton goal

Rio Ferdinand has told BT Sport (broadcast on 10/2; 21:11) that Hugo Lloris’ attempt to keep Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s strike out for Everton’s first goal against Spurs was embarrassing.

Jose Mourinho’s side played their part in incredible first-half of football at Goodison Park. Davinson Sanchez gave Tottenham the lead inside four minutes.

But then Everton scored three times in seven minutes just before the break. Erik Lamela would get one back in stoppage-time at the end of the half.

The Toffees’ first goal came from a well-struck volley from Calvert-Lewin following a mistake from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

However, while the shot arrived at some speed, it surely has to go down as an error from Lloris. The goalkeeper was in the right position to keep it out.

And he seemed to get a good hand on the strike. Nevertheless, the ball still managed to find its way into the back of the net to bring Everton level.

Some may credit Calvert-Lewin for hitting the ball so cleanly. But Ferdinand seemed to be in no doubt that Lloris – who earns £100,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – should have done significantly better.

“It’s an embarrassment that is,” he told BT Sport. “He’s fallen back almost into his goal. His arms, like a powderpuff effort there. Weak. He’ll be disappointed I’m sure, as well as the Spurs fans and players.”

Ultimately, Spurs’ defensive issues would come back to haunt Mourinho’s men. They were beaten 5-4 after extra-time in what was an absolutely incredible tie between the two Premier League sides.
