Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has named Old Trafford academy prodigy Mason Greenwood in his top five Premier League youngsters.

The 18-year-old has enjoyed a swift rise into the Red Devils first team, breaking numerous records along the way.

Greenwood’s debut for United, as a substitute against Paris Saint-Germain on 6 March 2019, saw him become the club’s youngest-ever Champions League player at 17 years and 156 days.

On the final day of last season, he then became United’s youngest starter in the Premier League when he made his full debut against Cardiff City.

Greenwood has adapted seamlessly to life in the Red Devils first team, clocking up an impressive 36 appearances in all competitions, scoring 12 goals and claiming four assists.

“Mason Greenwood has to be in this five,” Ferdinand wrote in The Mirror. “What this kid is doing with his right and left foot.

“When he’s stood over a free kick in his own mind I bet his stood there like ‘does he want this on my right or left foot?’

“I’ve seen this kid since he was young and people at the club have said ‘this kid will be special’.

“Every level he’s played he’s looked unfazed and stepped up with pure, pure ease. He looks around and goes ‘Old Trafford, I’m meant to be here’ – that’s the vibe I get.

“That cold hearted, calm confidence. So he’s in there, I just want to see him play live more. When he gets stronger, like all these boys, they are going to hurt a lot of people.”

Greenwood’s stratospheric rise and continued impressive form has proven a shining light for United in a season of transition with plenty of ups and downs.

A versatile attacker with blistering pace, great technical ability and equally dangerous with either foot, he is a generational talent that could well go on to lead the United line for years to come.
