Jacob Murphy scored a late equaliser for Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon as the Toon came from behind to secure a point against Wolverhampton Wanderers – and Rio Ferdinand has sent the attacker a message on Instagram.

Murphy, 25, has endured a difficult spell at Newcastle since joining the Toon for a fee of £12million (Sky Sports) in the summer of 2017. He has since managed just 46 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle, only 24 of which have been starts.

However, a decent loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday last term – in which he had a hanf in 15 goals – has seen Murphy become more of a part of the Newcastle side. He scored in the 7-0 win over Morecambe, and has now played seven times this term.

The winger was used as a wing-back against Wolves on Sunday, with Raul Jimenez opening the scoring for Wolves with an excellent half-volley from the edge of the area. But Murphy netted a free-kick late on, posting on Instagram after the match.

Newcastle have made a decent start to the campaign, despite fans being disgruntled about the style of play under Steve Bruce. The Toon have earned eight points from six games, beating Burnley and West Ham.

But they have a decent run of games coming up, facing Southampton, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and West Brom in their next five Premier League games. Murphy will be hoping to retain his place, and Ferdinand has applauded the winger.

Callum Wilson also commented, praising the £25,000-a-week (Spotrac) winger – who has entered the final year of his contract.
