Rio Ferdinand has admitted that he thought one Tottenham Hotspur player was horrendous last season, but is now looking like a bargain.
Spurs have enjoyed a remarkable transformation under Ange Postecoglou. It is almost easy to forget what a mess the team appeared to be in towards the end of last season, particularly following Antonio Conte’s departure.
Several players have been absolutely outstanding. And one of those who has arguably been the biggest surprise is Pedro Porro.
Rio Ferdinand amazed by Pedro Porro transformation after Tottenham draw
Porro endured a difficult start to life in North London following his loan move from Sporting last January. But the 24-year-old has provided seven assists in the Premier League this season. And his latest came on Sunday as Spurs drew with Manchester United.

Gary Lineker was amazed by Porro’s passing at Old Trafford. And speaking on Vibe with Five, Rio Ferdinand suggested that he almost does not recognise the Spaniard this season.
“I do agree, Udogie and Porro, the way the manager’s improved these two. Porro, I was caning him last year, how have they paid that money for him? Horrendous last year. New manager comes in, set him up, new player, unreal. It’s almost like a bargain. They’re probably the two in-form full-backs as a pair in the league right now,” he said.
A masterstroke from Spurs
Tottenham agreed to pay £39 million to make the move permanent when they signed Porro on loan 12 months ago.
There would have been concerns about whether they had made a massive mistake when he struggled on loan. Full-backs are usually so important to how Antonio Conte’s sides play. So it was ominous that he failed to hit the ground running.
Porro did not actually start in Postecoglou’s first game, remaining on the bench for the clash with Brentford. But he has made up for lost time since then.
In today’s game, spending anything around £40 million for a key player has the potential to be a steal for any club at that end of the Premier League table.
If Porro keeps his current form up, there is absolutely no question that signing him was a masterstroke.
