Rio Ferdinand says he has no idea how good £65m Tottenham player will become

There are a lot of unknowns at Tottenham Hotspur right now.

Indeed, while Thomas Frank has started well, a loss to Bournemouth last weekend threw up a few doubts, and when you look at this team, there are a lot of unknown quantities.

It’s unclear if Micky van de Ven will finally manage to stay fit, it’s unclear how Xavi Simons will settle at Spurs after his big-money move, and it’s unclear whether or not Richarlison will be able to maintain his good form.

Dominic Solanke hasn’t been involved much so far this season due to injuries, and speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has made a claim about the Spurs striker and his potential.

Ferdinand was discussing England’s future number nine options, and he picked out Dominic Solanke as a player who seemingly has potential, but he noted that he really isn’t sure what sort of level the striker will reach.

Rio Ferdinand unsure on Dominic Solanke’s potential

Ferdinand spoke about England’s striker options beyond Harry Kane.

The pundit says it’s worrying how few strikers the Three Lions are producing at the moment, noting that even with a player like Solanke, you don’t quite know where his ceiling is.

Solanke got a £65m move to Tottenham last summer, and while Solanke was praised at times last season, he wasn’t exactly a prolific goalscorer.

“Are you looking at England now and going, England’s ability to produce the number nine now is quite worrying,” Ferdinand said.

“When you look beyond someone like Harry Kane, and no disrespect to the guys that have got Liam Delap, who’s gone to Chelsea, but they still seem to be in their development years of and we’re not sure what they’re going to end up being. Solanke as well, he’s done alright in his first year, but still not sure what level he’s going to get to.”

England’s striker options analysed

Ferdinand says he’s worried about England’s lack of strikers, and it’s easy to understand why.

Simply put, the Three Lions don’t have another world-class centre-forward beyond Harry Kane.

Ollie Watkins

Dominic Solanke
Liam Delap

Ollie Watkins is a brilliant player, but, with all due respect, he’s not of the calibre of past World Cup winning strikers throughout history.

As for Solanke, at his best, he’s a 20-goal-a-season striker, but over the past 12 months, he hasn’t been able to consistently showcase that form.

Fingers crossed Solanke can rediscover his best form this term.
