Rio Ferdinand has responded to a Tweet from Times reporter Henry Winter on Everton defender Ben Godfrey with a big six-word claim – rating him among the best Under-23 defenders in European football.

Godfrey, 23, joined Everton in the summer after impressing for Norwich City last season – despite the Canaries being relegated. The Toffees splashed out £25million (BBC), and he has since starred for the Merseyside outfit.

Indeed, the £77,000-a-week (Spotrac) England Under-21 international has now clocked up 16 appearances in all competitions for Everton – playing in the middle of the defence, at right-back or even in place of Lucas Digne.

Winter was full of praise for Godfrey, following Everton’s 2-1 win over Leeds at Elland Road on Wednesday night. Ferdinand, an ambassador for the New Era agency which represents Godfrey, responded to Winter on Twitter.

TBR’s view – Godfrey in line for an England call-up?

England have a plethora of options when it comes to right-back, but in the middle of the defence, the list of names is smaller. Harry Maguire, John Stones, Michael Keane, Eric Dier and Conor Coady are first choice.

Joe Gomez is injured, while Tyrone Mings, James Tarkowski and even AC Milan loanee Fikayo Tomori are options too. But Godfrey is in as good a run of form as any of those players. He is making a late push for Euro 2021.
