Rio Ferdinand makes big post-match claim about Manchester City’s Phil Foden

Rio Ferdinand has told BT Sport that he believes Manchester City sensation Phil Foden is the best young player in the world at the moment on form, after the England international sparkled during Tuesday’s semi-final against PSG.

With City boasting a 2-1 away win from the first leg, they were tasked with avoiding defeat at The Etihad on Tuesday  to progress at the hands of Mauricio Pochettino’s side. PSG dominated possession, but City were the better side.

Riyad Mahrez nicked the headlines as he scored two close-range goals to down Pochettino’s PSG 2-0 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate – the second being assisted by Foden. Pep Guardiola has finally guided City into the final.

Ferdinand claimed after the match that despite the recent form of Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe among others, he believes that on current form – Foden is the best young player in the world on form, following his assist.

“He showed tonight that he can produce at this level and be consistent in terms of his end product,” Ferdinand said. “That’s why he is playing in this team. On form, Foden is the best young player in the world right now. I’m not saying Foden is the best player, but right now, he is the best young player.

TBR’s view – Haaland and Mbappe are special players

As are the likes of Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham, Alphonso Davies and plenty more. But Foden, Haaland and Mbappe have taken the bar higher, proving to be proper game-changing players at this age.

Haaland failed to provide the difference against City as Guardiola’s side progressed, with Foden stealing the headlines in that tie – and while Mbappe is arguably up there with the world’s best regardless of age, Foden is unreal.

He has been excellent, near perfect and it is exciting for England and City. Ferdinand is bang on.
