Rio Ferdinand has now made an ominous U-turn about Manchester United

The Premier League is shaping up for a grand finale across the table. Aside from the title race, there’s also the race for fourth, with Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Manchester United in the running.

At present, Spurs and the Villans are the frontrunners, both sitting on 60 points, while the Red Devils are sixth on 49 but with a game in hand.

With Manchester United still having seven games to play, it’s not an impossibility for them to go on a winning run and potentially sneak in ahead of the teams above.

After all, all three teams have struggled with inconsistency this season, so while it’s unlikely, it’s not impossible for Man United to potentially get the better of Tottenham and Villa.

However, Old Trafford legend Rio Ferdinand has now admitted that he just can’t see the Red Devils doing so over the coming weeks.

What has Rio Ferdinand said about Manchester United top-four hopes?

Speaking to talkSPORT, the Manchester United icon thinks both teams are “too far ahead of us”, even though Spurs and Villa haven’t been particularly consistent themselves.

Ferdinand said he was previously confident about Man United’s chances of sealing a Champions League spot, but he doesn’t feel that’s the case now.

“It’s an uphill task now,” said Ferdinand. “I was confident about a month or two ago, but now no, I can’t see it. I look at the results that are coming through and Spurs are still churning out a win here and there.

“Villa are in a bit of a funny patch but I just think they’re both too far ahead for us.

“Man United aren’t the most consistent team as it is anyway, it’s not like Man United are on an unbelievable roll and you go, ‘Actually, we could bang out six or seven wins on the bounce.’

“We’ve not done that all season, so why is it going to happen now? So, I just can’t see Man United being able to get past those two teams to get into the Champions League, not at all.”

It’s a shame that Ferdinand appears to have given up the ghost regarding Man United’s top-four chances, but it’s certainly a mountain to climb.

Erik ten Hag will have to do his best to try and keep his players focused on the task ahead and not look down, metaphorically speaking.

One game at a time, beginning with Bournemouth away on Saturday evening. Who knows, stranger things have happened in football.
