‘What is it?’: Rio Ferdinand shocked by Southgate leaving Alexander-Arnold out v Germany

Rio Ferdinand has expressed his shock at Trent Alexander-Arnold not being in the England squad that faces Germany this evening.

After a stuttering start to the season with Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold has once again been overlooked by Gareth Southgate ahead of a huge clash with the Germans. It is the last chance for Southgate to see his players at Wembley before the World Cup, and the Liverpool right-back hasn’t even made his squad for the game.

And speaking on his Vibe With Five Podcast, Rio Ferdinand has expressed his shock and demanded answers from Southgate as to why Trent doesn’t feature.

“How’s Trent not in the squad? What’s going on here? I can’t have it,” Ferdinand said.

“I don’t know how he’s not taking him. It’s either I know what he is and he’s going to play anyway, or he isn’t for me. What is it? That’s the question that needs to be asked.”

Ferdinand is not the only one to question the use of Trent lately by England and Southgate. Among a plethora of right-backs in the squad, there is a consensus among some that the Three Lions boss simply doesn’t trust the Liverpool man.

Certainly, him being left out once again tonight is another way of adding fuel to fire in that argument.

TBR’s View: Trent Deserves A Chance With England

The more this goes on, the more you feel Alexander-Arnold isn’t going to be part of the England squad for Qatar.

Southgate seems to prefer the defensive side that the likes of Reece James and Kieran Trippier bring, while Kyle Walker is always going to be selected as well. That leaves the Liverpool man stuck in a bit of a predicament, despite his immense talent.

Ferdinand is right to ask the question though. It would be handy to know just what Southgate things of Trent.
