Rio Ferdinand has told BT Sport that reported Arsenal target Houssem Aouar reminds him of Gunners icon Samir Nasri – and predicted the Lyon midfielder to join one of Europe’s biggest sides at some point.

Aouar, 22, has further cemented himself as one of Europe’s best young players with another stellar campaign that saw him score nine and create 10 goals in 41 appearances for Lyon. He already has 137 matches to his name for Lyon.

GFFN report – as per L’Equipe – that Arsenal have tabled an offer of cash plus Matteo Guendouzi, which was rejected. Lyon are said to want only money for the uncapped French midfielder, who is likely to earn his first senior cap soon.

Ferdinand has told BT Sport that Aouar reminds him of ex-Arsenal star Nasri, who is currently a free agent after most recently playing for Belgian side Anderlecht. He reckons Aouar will go on to play for one of Europe’s giants.

“He provides the creativity in that team,” Ferdinand said. “A kid so young is relied upon so much, but that says everything about him. He has imagination, vision, tactical awareness but the confidence that exudes out of him.

“Decision making, timing of the pass, he has it all. He reminds me a little bit of Nasri, I think he is a player can go on and join one of the top clubs in Europe.”

TBR’s view – The ideal Ozil replacement?

Though slightly different in the way he plays, Aouar would be the perfect replacement for the German veteran. Aouar gets about the pitch more, appearing out wide at times and even in the penalty area – scoring goals.

The pace of a winger, the technique of a 10 but the stamina of a box-to-box midfielder – Aouar really does have it all and has shown in the Champions League that he is a special talent. But Arsenal face a fight to land him.
