Newcastle star Jacob Murphy was instrumental in Steve Bruce’s side earning all three points against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday as the Toon earned a 2-1 win – and both Rio Ferdinand and a Southampton player have reacted on Instagram.
Newcastle notched a second successive win in the Premier League and climbed to the lofty heights of 12th place as substitutes Murphy and Dwight Gayle combined to earn a win. Newcastle had taked the lead through Miguel Almiron in the first minute.
The scoreline remained the same until the hour mark, as Darnell Furlong expertly volleyed home a cross from the left wing. With the game entering the final 10 minutes, the game was in danger of ending in a 1-1 draw.
Murphy, though, changed that. Coming on in the 80th minute, the winger picked the ball up on the right flank and curled in a delicious ball for Gayle to head home – beating Sam Johnstone at his near post. Murphy posted on Instagram.
It was a meaningful not goal, not least as Newcastle continued a winning run but more so because it was two ex-West Brom players to down Slaven Bilic’s side. Both Gayle and Murphy have spent season-long loans at the Baggies, from Newcastle.
Ferdinand, who is an ambassador for New Era Sports Global – the agency that acts as Murphy’s representatives – and Southampton’s £13.5million (BBC) goalkeeper Angus Gunn responded, with the latter comparing Murphy to David Beckham.
