David Neres was the talk of Everton over the weekend. The Ajax star has been linked with a potential move to Everton this summer. After a stellar season in which he helped the Dutch side to the Champions League semi-finals, Everton fans are excited at that possibility.
This weekend saw Everton forward Richarlison tell the Liverpool Echo that he has told Neres to join the club this summer.
Richarlison even mentioned that with fellow Brazilian international Bernard also at Goodison Park, Neres would settle in easily.
“He’s a player who really attacks defenders and runs at his marker, so he’s got the right profile. With me and Bernard there, it would work really well.”
However, the arrival of Neres, who according to The Sun is valued at £40 million, could actually be to the detriment of Bernard.
Signed on a free transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk last summer, Bernard had an inconsistent but promising first season at Everton. It was certainly not good enough yet to justify his reported (The Mirror) £150,000-a-week wages.
The mercurial attacker certainly has the talent to succeed at Goodison Park.
But Neres’ arrival would just add competition to the mix. Clearly, Marco Silva prefers Richarlison playing wide and it is his best position. Neres too is better on the flanks.
With Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Theo Walcott and Ademole Lookman also present, Bernard might find himself struggling to play regularly should Richarlison bring his other Selecao pal to Merseyside.
Bernard might not be as keen as Richarlison to see Neres heading to Goodison.
