Richard Keys says 27-year-old Manchester United player was such a pointless signing

Richard Keys has labelled Manchester United No.24 Andre Onana as a pointless signing by Erik ten Hag.

The 66-year-old made the comments when speaking alongside Andy Gray on beIN SPORTS.

So, what did Richard Keys say about Andre Onana at Manchester United? Let’s take a look…

Richard Keys feels Manchester United did not need Andre Onana

Well, Keys and Gray tore Ten Hag apart before Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Everton kicked off earlier today.

The pair criticised his “deluded” defence of his Manchester United career through the use of specific statistics, while also taking aim at a number of the Dutchman’s signings – including Onana.

Keys said: “Who spent £90m on Antony? Could have used that money to buy a support striker for Hojlund. Who spent £45m on a keeper he did not need? Well.”

Before the Cameroon international arrived at Old Trafford in a £47.2m deal from Inter Milan back in July, Ten Hag could call upon David De Gea, Dean Henderson and Jack Butland.

However, De Gea was released when his contract expired – despite winning the Golden Glove last season – while Henderson was sold to Crystal Palace in a deal worth £20m and Butland moved to Rangers.

These developments led to the signing of Onana – along with a £4.2m move for Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce.

Erik ten Hag probably could have kept David de Gea

Despite winning the Golden Glove last season, De Gea contributed too many wobbly moments, and you can understand why he was allowed to go.

However, some Manchester United fans – in hindsight – would probably have kept the Spaniard for another season had they known Onana would be equally as unconvincing.

The 27-year-old has conceded 57 goals in 38 appearances this season, while also making a number of high profile errors which mainly cost Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League, notably against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.

For a £47.2m fee, the Red Devils surely could have found a better goalkeeper.
