Return to international scene would be deserved reward for Burke’s Celtic form

Celtic loanee Oliver Burke is set to be recalled to the Scotland squad after a two-year exile, according to the Scottish Sun.

The forward, on loan from Championship outfit West Brom, picked up the most recent of his five international caps in March 2017 and is reportedly set to be in line for a sixth next month.

Scotland will face Kazakhstan and San Marino during the next international break and Alex McLeish has reportedly been running the rule over a host of players he can include in the squad.

Burke is apparently among them after the blistering start he has made to his Celtic career – three goals from his first seven games as he has excelled as in his new role as a central striker.

Just as Leigh Griffiths’ absence has created a window of opportunity for Burke at club level, it also hands the West Brom loanee a chance to shine for his country.

And a recall to the squad would be no more than Burke deserves for the way he has adjusted; to new surroundings, the pressure of playing for Celtic and to an unfamiliar centre-forward’s position in recent weeks.

Scotland needs more players like Burke in their side – young, exciting and technical options, capable of playing attacking football.

There is talent in the ranks but it needs to be brought together and given an opportunity and the way Burke is playing right now indicates he is likely to take it if one comes his way next month.
