Sunderland continued their good recent form with a 3-0 win over Southend United at the weekend. Jack Ross’ side have now won five games on the bounce and stay in touch with Peterborough United and Portsmouth in League One. The game was also memorable for Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady.
The 32-year-old scored the third goal in the game, helping to finish off any hopes Southend had of a comeback. It was the Irish international’s first goal of the season and it finally looks as though he is getting back to his best.
Signed by Simon Grayson last summer for a fee reported to be in the region of £250,000 his Sunderland career has been up-and-down. Statistically, McGeady did not have a terrible season last term. His seven goals and five assists in 37 games should not be shirked at for a side that finished bottom of the Championship.

However, he was consistently linked with an exit over the summer and injury was also a problem. The veteran suffered a calf injury over the summer, which ruled him out of the beginning of the season.
McGeady has now been involved in Sunderland’s last five League One fixtures and looks to be edging back to his best.
A 92-cap international, McGeady has played in Europe with Celtic, Spartak Moscow and Everton whilst he has also represented his nation at two European Championships.
So getting a player of his calibre back to anywhere near his best will give Sunderland a massive edge in the hunt for League One promotion.
