Republic of Ireland fans hail Wolves defender Matt Doherty after stunning performance

The Republic of Ireland fell agonisingly short of qualifying for Euro 2020 despite Matt Doherty’s best efforts.

Doherty scored an equaliser for the Boys in Green to set up a dramatic finale in Dublin. The Republic of Ireland needed a win against Denmark to qualify at their opponent’s expense.

However, Martin Braithwaite’s goal towards the end of the game made that a mountainous task. Mick McCarthy’s men had just 17 minutes to find two goals from somewhere.

With five minutes left, Doherty brought the Republic of Ireland level. Wolves fans have seen it so many times before but he popped up at the back post at the right time.

Enda Stevens got to the by-line and clipped a left-footed cross to the back post where Doherty slammed a header past Kasper Schmeichel. But the Republic of Ireland just couldn’t find that elusive second goal.

Doherty was only in the team because regular right-back Seamus Coleman was suspended. But Irish fans seem to think that the Wolves star should be in ahead of Coleman now.

Here are some tweets from the Republic of Ireland fans about Doherty’s performance from right-back.
