Reportedly scouted £18m man would replace Everton man perfectly – TBR View

Everton have scouted Dominik Szoboszlai, according to reports. The Hungarian could be an ideal long-term replacement for Gylfi Sigurdsson.

This comes from 90min. They say the Toffees are one of many clubs looking at Szoboszlai right now – and who can blame them? The 20-year-old is playing wonderfully for RB Salzburg and looks like the next star to come out of that club.

This is the same club who helped develop Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Erling Haaland, after all. SportBild believes Szoboszlai is close to RB Leipzig for around £18m but there’s no suggestion that deal is done.

If Everton want the player – and that seems like a very good price – they can still make a move. If they do, they’d have a wonderful long-term replacement for James Rodriguez.

Time for change

James Rodriguez took over the role of primary playmaker from 31-year-old Gylfi Sigurdsson this season. But James is 29 himself – Everton need a long-term option in that creative role.

Szoboszlai could be that player. He’s scoring and assisting goals and can play in the middle or out wide. We’ve seen Carlo Ancelotti use James that way and he could do the same with Szoboszlai.

And if we say James has two or three more years at the top level, then the Hungarian is an ideal age (20) to take over. He wouldn’t quite be in his prime but getting towards it with significant experience at the club under his belt.

If Everton really can get this deal done at £18m, it could be a no-brainer this January.
