Reported target Josh Koroma is an exciting prospect but not the immediate Josh Maja replacement that Sunderland need

Sunderland have reportedly launched a late bid to sign Josh Koroma from Leyton Orient.

According to The Independent’s deadline day live blog [11:28AM], Sunderland have bid £300,000 to test Leyton Orient’s resolve late in the January window.

Sunderland are hoping to add firepower to their attack ahead of tonight’s 11pm deadline and Koroma is an option.

The 20-year-old is a very impressive young striker, who already has nearly 100 senior appearances for the O’s under his belt.

Koroma is a regular for Justin Edinburgh’s team in the National League, playing up front alongside Macauley Bonne or sometimes operating on the wing.

The Londoner has scored nine goals in 30 appearances for the O’s this season, taking his total tally to 18 senior goals.

There is no doubt that Koroma is an exciting young talent and he would be a shrewd long-term acquisition for Sunderland.

But at the moment, the Black Cats need to find an immediate replacement for Josh Maja, who departed to join Bordeaux on a permanent deal.

Maja netted 16 goals in the first half of the season and Koroma is unlikely to replicate that tally.

While he remains a good option for the long-term future, Koroma is not the man to fire Sunderland to promotion this season.
