Sunderland are keen on Rotherham’s Jon Taylor, according to the Northern Echo, but he doesn’t want to drop into League One.
They report that the 26-year-old is keen to return to the second tier having been relegated with the Millers last season – all but ruling Sunderland out.
He said: “Hopefully, I can stay in the Championship. I think I have more to give in that division. In the Championship with Rotherham, I was always in and out of the team.
“I’d do well for a few games and then I’d get taken out of the team. That wasn’t good for my confidence. It was hard because I’d see players in other positions getting a run of games. I love my football and just want to play all the time.”

The report says that newly-promoted sides Barnsley and Luton, who both clinched automatic promotion ahead of Sunderland, are interested in offering Taylor the route back into the Championship he craves.
Sunderland’s status will always be a lure for some players, but others will want to push themselves to the highest level they can, without wanting to put an extra year in at third-tier level to take the Black Cats back there.
Taylor’s comments are perhaps a slightly stark reality check for Sunderland as they redouble their efforts to put a squad together which is capable of winning promotion at the second time of asking.
