Reported Rangers target John Lundstram once called Steven Gerrard his ‘role model’

Rangers may be on the verge of claiming back Glasgow superiority after their recent Old Firm win at Ibrox, but Steven Gerrard is already planning for next season.

According to reports, the Rangers boss wants to bring John Lundstram to Ibrox in the summer.

That is according to a report from The Athletic, who suggest Rangers would be willing to offer him a pre-contract deal this month. The box-to-box midfielder is available on a free transfer in the summer as his deal at Sheffield United is coming to an end. The 26-year-old is said to be after £40,000-a-week but Gerrard is a huge fan of the player and that could play a significant role in talking him into a Ibrox move.

That feeling is more than mutual.

In the past, Lundstram has made no secret of his admiration for the Rangers boss.

Speaking back in November 2019, the Liverpudlian admitted his adoration for Gerrard growing up, even if he did come through the youth ranks at the Rangers manager’s biggest playing rivals.

“Steven Gerrard was my role model,” Lundstram told The Times. “To see a local lad playing in Liverpool’s first team was something that every young Scouser wanted to be. The way he played, the way you could see his passion on the pitch rubbed off on every young Scouser.

“If you look at a lot of sporting people from Liverpool we’re quite similar, we don’t really get above ourselves. That might be the working-class city we come from.”

So whilst it may seem as though Rangers have a tough fight on their hands to convince Lundstram into a Glasgow switch, it appears they have an ace up their sleeve.

The presence of Gerrard at Ibrox will undoubtedly be a major draw for Lundstram and might just get Rangers their man.
