Reported price-hike should see Leeds United move on from Cyle Larin transfer pursuit

Leeds United have been linked with a move for striker Cyle Larin in recent weeks. However, recent developments suggest Leeds should already think about moving on.

Director of football Victor Orta appears to be a big fan of the striker, who is currently on loan at Belgian side Zulte Waregem from Besiktas.

The Sun on Sunday (as relayed by the Daily Star) reported Leeds United interest back in September 2017, as Leeds looked for Chris Wood replacements. Middlesbrough were also linked, as reported by Gazette Live, whilst Orta was still in charge of recruitment on Teesside.

Larin ended up at Besiktas, where he has struggled, but his loan move to Belgium has been a revelation. The 24-year-old has scored nine goals and assisted 11 this season. His good form has seen Leeds linked (Milliyet) with a potential £5 million move for the player, once Zulte have activated their £2.5 million option on the player.

Now, however, the asking price appears to have gone up. According to Voetbal24, Zulte are fielding interest from Premier League teams and one of Belgium’s premier clubs for the striker. The asking price has therefore gone up to €12 million (£10.4m).

Larin has had a decent season in Belgium but at over £10 million Leeds will surely move on.

The Canadian struggled in Turkish football for regular playing time and whilst he is undoubtedly talented his lack of experience in the English game would make him a massive gamble.

For a team blessed with more spending power, throwing the dice on Larin might be worth it at that price but Leeds simply don’t have that luxury.

If Leeds have £10.4 million to spend in the summer, they would be better off spending it elsewhere.
