Liverpool are reportedly keeping tabs on Ajax talent Perr Schuurs, according to reports from The Mirror. The Reds are short at the back following Virgil van Dijk’s injury and his countryman appears to be on the radar.

It is not the first time either. The report points out that Liverpool have previously had Schuurs on trial from Fortuna Sittard.

In fact, as reported by SoccerNews, Liverpool were left annoyed at Ajax for swooping in on the player after putting in considerable legwork of their own.

But the player’s father has previously hinted as to why Schuurs did not end up joining Liverpool after the trial period.

Lambert Schuurs, a former Dutch handball international, made it clear that the offer on the table for Schuurs was extremely lucrative for both player and club, however, it seems it was considered too early for such a financially rewarding move.

“At Fortuna, he did nice things and gave nice passes, but he had not yet had any knowledge of positioning,” Schuurs senior told De Limburger in October last year. “But a hype was created around him. Partly because of you (the media), but especially because of people who want to make money from him.

“Then clubs are informed and suddenly Juventus and Liverpool want him. At Liverpool, he could earn one million (euros) net a year. The Fortuna leadership went completely crazy that we did not accept that.”

It seems that Schuurs made the right decision. He has since emerged as the replacement for Matthijs de Ligt at Ajax and impressed when the Dutch side faced Liverpool in the Champions League recently.

Now, Liverpool might have to pay him a substantial amount more than the £900,000-a-year they offered after his previous trial period.
