Earlier this month Leeds United were being linked with a move for VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj. As reported by Bild in Germany, Leeds were prepared to pay £7 million on the Kosovan midfield talent. The report suggested that Wolfsburg were willing to sell the player, as his contract was due to expire in 2020 and Norwich City were also keen on the 21-year-old.
It was an exciting development for Leeds fans. The midfielder has been excellent this season and his versatility as a player would make him perfect for Marcelo Bielsa.
However, it soon became clear that Leeds would not be signing him.
He signed a new deal at the Volkswagen Arena nearly a fortnight ago. His new deal keeps him at the Bundesliga side until 2023.
Now, he has celebrated that new deal in some style. In his first game since signing the contract, Rexhbecaj bagged his second goal of the season. He also provided an assist as Wolfsburg defeated Augsburg 8-1 in the final game of the Bundesliga season.
Leeds United, who will be playing in the Championship again next season, will be thoroughly disappointed this man is now off the radar. After a performance like this, it is clear to see why.
