Reported Leeds United summer target Mohammed Elyounoussi keeps quiet on other club interest

Celtic newbie Mohamed Elyounoussi has been discussing his transfer options throughout the summer, amid reports both Leeds United and Middlesbrough were keen on the player.

The Southampton-owned attacker joined Celtic on loan for the rest of the season earlier this week. Speaking about the move to Glasgow, as reported by the Scottish Sun, the Norwegian admitted he has had other options this summer.

“I don’t want to talk about any other clubs but I was happy when it got done.

“There were other clubs in for me, but I felt like Celtic was the right choice. The club, size of club and the way they play football too.”

The same report detailed interest from both Leeds and Middlesbrough. Norwegian publication VG builds on this further. They suggest that the player actually turned down loan moves to the Championship duo earlier this summer.

Leeds fans are of course already aware of their interest in the player. Another Norwegian source, TV2, reported last month that the West Yorkshire club made a move for the player.

They claimed a potential loan deal fell through due to Elyounoussi’s wages.

Elyounoussi, who cost Southampton a reported (BBC) £16 million last season has struggled in Britain since his move from Basel. But his excellent performances in Switzerland have clearly not been forgotten and that is why the likes of Leeds, Boro and, eventually, Celtic were so keen.

Leeds moved on, snapping up Helder Costa on loan from Wolves, so will not feel overly disappointed to have failed in this approach. But Elyounoussi’s form at Celtic might have watching eyes from Elland Road.
