Reported Everton target Nikola Maksimovic once credited Carlo Ancelotti for career 'rebirth'
Everton are being linked with a move for the Napoli defender Nikola Maksimovic this weekend. As reported by CalcioMercato, the Toffees are considering the Serbian international as a potential transfer alternative to long-term target Gabriel, whose transfer has been hijacked by rival clubs.
The report claims Everton could get the player for a fee in the region of £17.5 million despite Maksimovic being a regular for the Partenopei last season.
It would certainly be a deal that would appeal to the player, based on his previous comments regarding current Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti.
Maksimovic was previously managed at Napoli by the current Goodison gaffer.
Speaking to Radio Kiss Kiss in 2018, as relayed by Football Italia, the Serbian made it clear that the Italian had been a major beneficiary to his career.
“The rebirth came with Ancelotti,” Maksimovic stated. “After the six month loan there was the chance to stay here. On the first day, we talked and we understood each other well.
“I understood what he wanted, and I worked really hard to get this opportunity.”
Everton are clearly in need of a new centre-back. Whilst Mason Holgate and Michael Keane’s respective forms improved last season Yerry Mina remains injury-prone and Jarrad Branthwaite is too young to be thrown in at the deep end.
Maksimovic is a player Ancelotti can trust who could provide perfect cover in the centre-back role.
Everton fans should be hoping this is a deal that gets done.
