Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta appears to be a wanted man in England. L’Equipe have reported the likes of Everton, Southampton and Newcastle United as having an interest in the striker this summer.
The report suggested bids of around €20million and €25million (£17.8million and £22.25million) have been submitted for the player but rejected. The German side were reportedly open to selling somewhere in the region of €35million to €40million (£31million and £35.6million).
Everton are still on the hunt for a proper replacement for Romelu Lukaku, for which Mateta could fit the bill. Newcastle may need a replacement for Salomon Rondon whilst there is also growing interest in Ayoze Perez. Southampton still need to make additions to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s arsenal if they are to fight off relegation again next term.
But it seems Everton, Newcastle and Southampton can all forget about it, as Mainz are insisting the player is not for sale.
As reported by Sport1, Mainz’s sporting director Rouven Schroder has told Sky Germany that Mateta is not for sale at any price.
“In short, we will not sell him in this summer, he is not on the market.
“We are extremely satisfied with the development of Jean-Philippe. He is very valuable to us, already good at his footballing overall profile, and he still has further development potential, and he is simply a good, authentic guy and very popular with the fans.”
Everton, Newcastle and Southampton will undoubtedly be left disappointed. Mateta scored 14 goals from 36 appearances last season and at just 21-years-old looks a potentially top talent who could thrive in the Premier League.
But it appears the Premier League trio will need to look elsewhere for a new striker this summer.
