A Celtic XI took on Arbroath in a pre-season friendly yesterday and unfortunately lost 1-0 to the Red Lichties. It was a chance for several Celtic fringe players and youngsters to impress, with the first-team on Europa League duty. It also acted as a chance for three trialists to earn a Celtic future.

The three trialists have now been revealed by VideoCelts. Former Rangers midfielder Liam Burt was already known to be training at the club and he featured in midfield. Scott Robertson, currently a free agent after his contract expired at Celtic this summer, was seemingly aiming for a reprieve.

The other player was reportedly Tom Leighton.

The versatile defender operated at right-back. However, as he confirmed to Watford’s official website a year ago he considers himself a centre-back and models his game on Vincent Kompany.

As reported by the Daily Record in May, Celtic are keen on signing the 18-year-old. He left Motherwell for Watford in 2017, despite interest from Benfica, but is said to be keen on a return to Scottish football.

As confirmed by the Premier League last month Leighton is now a free agent. He was included on Watford’s list of released players for the upcoming season.

The Northern Ireland under-19 international could easily be a bright prospect going forward. Celtic fans will be keeping tabs on any progress in this potential deal.
