A player reportedly sought after by Arsenal was previously described by Gunners legend Arsene Wenger as “not far from Ronaldo and Messi” in quality.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, Arsenal are one of the clubs who have been alerted by Barcelona’s willingness to part ways with Antoine Griezmann.
The France forward joined the Blaugrana last summer for a €120million (£107.7million) fee, penning a five-year contract.
Despite Griezmann’s Barca arrival to much fanfare, the club statement describing him as “one of the best players in the world”, things haven’t quite gone to plan thus far.
According to The Mirror, the feeling within the Barca squad was that they didn’t need a player like Griezmann.
Sport claims that, since he has failed to hit the levels expected, the Spanish giants are prepared to consider his departure.
As per talkSPORT, Arsenal were interested in Griezmann back in 2013, when a transfer from Real Sociedad failed to materialise, and again in 2017 when missing out on the Champions League ended their hopes of signing the then Atletico Madrid man.
In 2016, meanwhile, Wenger told French outlet Konbini, days before the Euro 2016 final: “Griezmann for me is one of the candidates for the Ballon d’Or. In Spain, he is not far from Ronaldo and Messi.”
Griezmann is an incredibly talented player whose credentials and CV speak for themselves, but his first season at Barcelona, while not bad by any means, suggests he may not quite be a right fit for them.
He has toiled at times, shunted into a supporting role after years as Atleti’s main man, and has scored just eight times in 26 La Liga games – although 14 goals in all competitions perhaps paints a better picture of his overall efforts.
Could it be third time lucky for Arsenal with regards to getting their hands on Griezmann, could he wind up at Manchester United, or will be stay put at Barca and fight for his place as the team’s main striker?
