Arsenal and Chelsea target, Dayot Upamecano, could follow Timo Werner’s route to the Premier League, if the latest comments from RB Leipzig CEO, Oliver Mintzlaff, are to be believed.
Werner agreed to a move to Chelsea last month, putting an end to months of speculation surrounding the German striker. However, he only completed the transfer after the Bundesliga outfit got him to sign a new deal with a release clause trigger.
And Upamecano, who is another highly-rated star on Leipzig’s books, could follow the same path. Speaking to Kicker (quotes via Bulinews), CEO Mintzlaff confirmed the club are working to sort out the defender’s future.
“I assume that he will also play for us next season. We are in good talks to find a solution to prevent him from leaving on a free transfer next year.
“It worked out with Timo Werner, and I assume that we will do our homework with regard to Dayot as well.”
The 21-year-old has been one of the top performers in the German league this season. That form has seen him attract a wealth of interest across Europe, with Arsenal credited with being close to a deal back in June. (Tuttosport)
Mintzlaff’s comments, then, seem to suggest Leipzig could be open to selling Upamecano. The Gunners, no doubt, will be keeping a close eye on things over in Germany.

Unfortunately for the Gunners, it looks like Leipzig are protecting themselves here and will want a big fee for Upamecano.
Of course, the defender could well see out his contract and simply move on a free. However, you get the impression the German side won’t allow that to happen and he’ll be sold now if that is the feeling they are getting.
Mikel Arteta needs a top defender and Upamecano ticks all the boxes. He’ll be hoping, then, that his board back him if he insists they sign the 21-year-old.
