Report: Yorkshire club set sights on £60k-a-week Liverpool player
Yorkshire club Sheffield United are reportedly keen on Liverpool defender Ben Davies.
According to The Daily Mail, Sheffield United have set their sights on the 25-year-old during this summer’s transfer window.
The £60,000-a-week centre-back moved to Anfield at the start of February, but was overlooked by manager Jurgen Klopp in the second half of the season.
He’s still yet to make his competitive first-team debut for the Reds.
However, The Athletic previously said that Liverpool have informed Davies he’s not available for transfer this summer.
Klopp was extremely complimentary of him when he was signed from Preston earlier in the year:
“We see the potential really. We see the quality and we see the potential as well because he’s 25 and there’s a lot to come for him. I love a lot about his play. He’s a really good footballer, looks like a proper leader in this Preston team, good in challenges, looks football smart, can play different positions because he played in a back three and a back four and all these things,” Klopp said, as quoted by The Metro.
Ben Davies at Liverpool remains a great mystery
If reports are true, Liverpool will fend off interest in Davies.
Sheffield United, who are back in the Championship following promotion, look like a good fit for Davies on paper.
However, he’s due to stay on the fringes at Anfield.
It’s hard to picture the centre-half getting a look-in, as the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate, Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams are all still at the club.
But, maybe Klopp has a plan for him.
