Report: Wolves want Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis

Goal has claimed Wolverhampton Wanderers are in talks with Atletico Madrid and former Chelsea left-back Filipe Luis over a potential free transfer to Molineux this summer.

Despite managing 32 appearances in all competitions this season, 33-year-old Luis is out of contract at Atletico Madrid. He scored two goals and created three more for Diego Simeone’s side.

Luis only played 26 times for Chelsea during their Premier League-winning 2014-15 campaign. But he returned to Simeone’s side just a year later, and has since turned out 333 times for Atletico.

However, he looks unlikely to play again for Atletico, with a whole host of clubs interested in his services. The report claims Wolves are in talks, but so are Brazilian side Flamengo and Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

It is also believed an unnamed Spanish club also fancy luring Luis away from Atletico.

TBR’s view

Wolves are well stocked on the left side of defence, with the permanent signing of Jonny proving to be one of Nuno Espirito Santo’s best bits of business. He has impressed so much, that he has earned a place in the Spain side.

Ruben Vinagre is a more than capable replacement so it begs the question, do Wolves need Luis? At 33 years of age, he is hardly going to get any better – more likely, he is to decline.

Expensive wages are likely and although finances are no issue for Wolves, signing Luis seems to be a waste of funds on the face of it.
