Wolverhampton Wanderers have set their sights on Preston North End defender Ben Davies this winter.
According to The Express and Star, Wolves will launch a £10m bid in January. Preston are desperate to keep the 24-year-old to boost their promotion credentials but this offer could test their resolve. Meanwhile, Brighton & Hove Albion are also interested.
Nuno Espirito Santo wants a new defender in January – especially after Willy Boly picked up a serious injury. Matt Doherty joined the list of concerns in yesterday’s game with Arsenal while Ryan Bennett is currently out.
This has left Nuno with a selection dilemma at the back. Currently, he is operating with Leander Dendoncker and Romain Saiss as the two centre-backs either side of Conor Coady. Arguably, both players are better in midfield.
Davies can operate at left-back or centre-back and his form for Preston has caught the eye. He has played 14 matches this season, taking his total tally to over 100 for the Lilywhites. With Davies at the back, Preston are serious contenders for promotion.
Davies is a proven performer at Championship level with 87 games under his belt in the second tier. He has proven that he is one of the most consistent performers in this division and deserves a chance to show his worth in the top-flight.
The English defender fits the bill perfectly for Nuno’s system. His ability to play at left-back or centre-back means he has the perfect style to operate as a left-sided centre-half in the back-three.
