Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interest in Schalke midfielder Omar Mascarell, according to CaughtOffside.

The 28-year-old has been one of the few positives in what has been a dismal season for the Bundesliga side, who are hurtling towards relegation.

Schalke are rock bottom of the German top flight on just 10 points, 11 adrift of safety, and have won just one of their 24 league games this season.

Mascarell has made 19 league appearances this season, and 66 in all competitions since joining from Real Madrid in the summer of 2018.

The Spaniard has featured predominantly in a defensive midfield role throughout his career, but can also be deployed in a more advanced central position.

Mascarell came through the ranks at the Bernabeu, who sold him initially to Eintracht Frankfurt before activating a buy-back clause in order to make profit in a sale to Schalke.

The Gelsenkirchen side reportedly bought him for £9million but, given their seemingly imminent relegation and financial issues, he could reportedly be sold for just £4million.

TBR View:

Mascarell is a good player who has enjoyed a great career in La Liga’s top two divisions and the Bundesliga, as well as boasting some experience of English football.

He spent the 2014-15 season on loan at Derby, making 30 appearances in all competitions and 23 in the Championship, though a tendon injury meant his season finished in March.

Then Derby boss Steve McLaren bemoaned Mascarell’s absence, deeming him “terrific for us”.

Given Schalke are unlikely to hang on to their bigger players if they get relegated, Mascarell seems like an inexpensive and decent addition to Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad.
