Mexican outlet MedioTiempo have claimed that Wolverhampton Wanderers have joined the race to sign Club America defender Edson Alvarez, amid rumours Celtic want to land the versatile ace.
Still only 21 years of age, 22-time Mexico international Alvarez is one of Liga MX’s best products in recent years. He has already played 107 times for Club America’s senior side.
Showing ability at right-back and centre-back and breaking into the senior Mexico side, Alvarez has even been moved into holding midfield of late. This season, he clocked up 46 appearances in all competitions.
His excellent rise to stardom in his home country has caught the attention of those in Europe. Ajax and PSV Eindhoven have been linked, with the report claiming he has an £8million release clause in his contract.
Previously, The Sun have claimed that Celtic are also interested in the impressive Alvarez, but that signing the Mexican would see the Hoops part with a huge chunk of their transfer budget.
Alvarez is an excellent prospect. Though he is unproven at European level, he has all the tools necessary to make it big in the Premier League.
Wolves have plenty of options at centre-back, but with Nuno Espirito Santo using three centre-backs in his starting line-up, the cover needs to be extensive. Alvarez’s ability to play in numerous positions makes him ideal.
But Wolves will face stern competition from those in Ajax who reached the Champions League semi-final, as well as Celtic who would make Alvarez first choice and potentially have the chance to play in the Champions League, too.
